Interview with CIS onsite

Early Intervention Specialist

Hello, my name is Chris…….

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) has greatly helped all of my clients.  The one comment I always hear from safety professionals at all locations I go into is the EIP program gives us a step before a doctor visit. Historically manufacturers have two options: 1) ignore an injury and hope it improves on its own or 2) a doctor/clinic visit which frequently leads to an OSHA recordable. What the program does is gives these safety professionals another option which is an EIP visit.

When an employee has an incident/ache/strain, I as an EIP Specialist gets called to evaluate the severity of the issue.  I then work with the safety professional and put an action plan in place. This action plan consists of job site visit with body mechanic education, ergonomic recommendations for specific job, prevention techniques, and trigger point massage.  Rarely does an EIP visit lead to a MD/clinic visit. This benefits all involved, the employee doesn’t have to miss any work and the company doesn’t have to absorb a recordable.

The physical therapy industry has changed greatly since my time in school. It used to be treat people after a severe injury is present. What early intervention allows is us to do is get out in front of these injuries before they ever take place or shortly after they begin and before they become severe. It is a proactive approach to safety which greatly reduces recordable MSD’s.

Contact CIS onsite (www.cisonsite.com) to get your own early intervention specialist at your site and you will see firsthand the benefits of having an onsite injury prevention program.

Ergonomic Solutions:

Encourage your Employee’s to maintain neutral wrist (picture with green arrow) when working to prevent wrist and elbow issues including carpal tunnel and tennis elbow.

Remember to have your Employee’s push rather than pull when possible as this decreases shoulder stress and assists the Employee with body weight to reduce force required to move object.
